Common types

Common Cathode and Common Anode. The cathode side of the LED is connected to ground and the anode side is connected to the power supply (+5v). Since 7 segment LEDs have 8 LEDs inside, they have the option of either common cathode or common anode. This way, they require 8 inputs and a common connection. If not, 16 pins would be needed on the LED. A common cathode 7 segment LED will have 8 pins with the power (+5v) connected to one ground pin. A common anode 7 segment LED will have 8 ground pins and 1 common pin where the power (+5v) is connected.
