Lead frame structure and purpose functions

Lead Frame and Substrate are two commonly used structures in electronic device packaging. Their differences are as follows:
1. Structure and purpose:
- Lead frame: A lead frame is a three-dimensional structure made of metal or alloy, usually consisting of a set of parallel-arranged leads, support sheets and connectors. It is mainly used for IC packaging and other similar electronic devices to provide connection, support and electrical connection of the internal pins of electronic devices.
- Substrate: A substrate is a flat or multi-layer structure, usually made of non-conductive material such as fiberglass, ceramic or polymer, on which the circuit layout and connection points are printed. It is used to support and connect electronic components and circuits and serves as the basis for electronic device packaging.
2. Function:
- Lead frame: Lead frame is mainly used to provide pin connection and support functions for electronic components, and to connect electronic components to other circuits through leads.
- Substrate: The substrate is mainly used to provide circuit layout and circuit connection functions to integrate electronic components onto the circuit board, and to provide electromechanical support and electrical connections.
3. Application scope:
- Lead frames: Lead frames are mainly used for finished packaged integrated circuits (ICs) and some other types of electronic devices, such as some sensors and optoelectronic devices.
- Substrate: Substrate is widely used in the manufacturing process of electronic products, including circuit boards, printed circuit boards (PCB), multi-layer circuit boards, etc., for the assembly and wiring of electronic products.
The choice of lead frame or substrate needs to be determined based on the specific application and packaging needs, taking into account factors such as electronic device type, cost, packaging process, electrical performance and space requirements.
