Since 2009, the concept of LED TV has become popular, and the latest LED TV launched by LG is only 6.9mm thick. Less than the thickness of a pencil, people are amazed by the progress of technology, and this credit should be attributed to LED. Let me explain here that the LED TV mentioned in the media should actually be called an LED backlight TV, because the backlight of ordinary LCD TVs is CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent lamp), and LED TVs replace LEDs as backlights. In the second quarter of 2009, Samsung's shipment share of the US LCD TV market rose to 21.3%, a sharp increase of 3.5 percentage points from the previous quarter. iSuppli TV system analysts believe that the increase in sales is inseparable from Samsung's active launch and marketing of LED-backlit LCD TVs. iSuppli estimates that 2.2% of LCD TVs shipped in the US market in the second quarter of 2009 used LED backlights, compared with zero in the same period of 2008. iSuppli predicts that in 2010, shipments of 40-inch and larger LED-backlit LCD TVs will increase more than six times compared to 2009, rising from 2.5 million units in 2009 to 18.8 million units. Regarding the prediction of future LED backlight TVs, although the prediction values of various research institutions are different, it is certain that LED backlight TVs are worth looking forward to in 2010, and more and more LEDs will be used for LCD TV backlights. .
LED backlight has many advantages over CCFL:
Energy saving: The photoelectric efficiency of cold cathode lamps is around 60lm/W, while the luminous efficiency of commercial LEDs has reached over 100lm/W;
More environmentally friendly: Toxic materials are used in CCFL manufacturing
Make the TV slimmer: LED backlight has changed the mechanical structure design of the TV backlight source, which can greatly reduce the thickness of the light guide plate in the traditional backlight source, making the LED backlight TV slimmer. Mobile phone backlights usually use 4-5 LEDs, laptop LED backlights require an average of 45 LEDs, and an LED TV requires an average of 500 LEDs. LED backlight has already penetrated to a certain extent in small and medium-sized displays.
In mobile phone applications, 100% use LED backlight; DisplaySearch estimates that the penetration rate of LED backlight in notebook computers will reach 52% in 2009, and will rapidly grow to 81% in 2010. The penetration of LED backlight in the LCD TV field has just begun, but it is of great significance.
